Leading Cross-Generational Teams

Toronto-Vancouver-US-Canada cross-generations for team building

at no time in our history

have so many generations been asked to work together,

shoulder to shoulder,

cubicle by cubicle ...

some client comments ...

"I would never have thought to consider these kinds of cross-generational challenges as a way to understand some the interpersonal conflict within my department.  Now that I have these facts, I can definitely begin action plans to resolve some thorny issues."

          financial services director, MDS Sciex

"Wow; Wow; Wow. This is a valuable course for ANYONE and EVERYONE.  It helps us to understand that if anything is certain in life, it’s change."

purchasing manager, Honeywell

"This workshop was very thought provoking – made us think more profoundly; also Sensitivity – help us to think more about what clients are dealing with.  The facilitator made it fun – AV, props, hand-outs made learning experiences enjoyable."

health care professional, Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital

Key Objectives

  • Out-Think:  identify generational definitions and demographics without reinforcing negative stereotypes
  • Out-Perform:  bridge the understanding gap between generations
  • Out-of-the-Box:  learn ways to make cross-generational diversity work for, not against, team building efforts

The once-linear power structure at work, from older to younger, is vanishing.  You won't find this taught in MBA school.  You need out-of-the-box team building solutions to face the uncharted change challenges ahead.

During change, destabilized team members resort to self-protective personal agendas. Unless people understand how to manage generational dynamics, these agendas are guaranteed to conflict.

What we should be doing today is celebrating our generational differences.  Each group brings a unique perspective that can be a powerful driver for change.  Younger workers bring fresh insights and boundless energy.  Older workers bring the gifts of corporate memory and experience.  Organizations that can build bridges between these generational groups will be positioned to exceed both productivity and customer expectations during change.

And speaking of customers ... here is a "not-done-to-death" idea for expanding customer satisfaction (both internal and external) as a part of your team building objectives.  There are unlimited applications for this new team building competency, such as resolving customer complaints, customer presentations, customer recovery, customer communications.

During change, any existing cross-generational tensions always skyrocket.  Quit-&-Stayers create gargantuan power and turf struggles, which drives productivity into the ditch.

And seriously jeopardizes customer service.

Your key people are the foundation of your  team reconstruction effort. Start re-recruiting them fast.

Every time a key player withdraws into Quit-&-Leave or Quit-&-Stay™, a chunk of your competitive advantage disappears with them.

This program is a powerful addition to a conference or retreat agenda when you want to deliver fun, as well as pragmatic and thought-provoking team building outcomes.

There are indoor/outdoor team building options for The Apprentice  The Amazing Race and Survivor formats, loosely based on the reality TV programs. These flexible sessions deliver practical outcomes driven by your goals and objectives.  Results can be debriefed for either a quick or an in-depth analysis of the group's teamwork successes and challenges.
