Toronto-Vancouver-US-Canada change management team building ALL ABOARD

INDOOR or OUTDOOR

Free Toronto-Vancouver-US-Canada change management team building All Aboard Game

Time:

  • Approximately 15 minutes (more, based on number of participants and length of debrief desired)

Participants:

  • Groups of 12 - smaller groups can also work by shortening the string.

Materials:

  • Ten-foot string for each group of 12 or 2 1/2 foot square tarp/blanket

Purpose:

  • Group Communications

  • Problem Solving

  • Patience

  • Cooperation

Preparation and Notes for Facilitator:

WARNING:  This activity requires people working together in close physical proximity and facilitators should be careful to ensure that individuals are comfortable with these dynamics, particularly when working with a cross-gender group.

  • Place string on floor to make a 2 1/2  foot square.

  • Create one square for each group.

  • Tell the group that the ground has suddenly become radioactive, or some other fun reason.

  • Because of the need for close proximity, consider asking the group to remove any excessive jewelry, sharp watches, etc.

  • The group has to get everyone inside the square as quickly as possible to escape certain death.

  • No feet can remain outside the square.

  • The entire group must be aboard (no feet outside the string) for a full 30 seconds.

Facilitate the activity:

  • The group will have to support itself to keep everyone in the square.

  • Option:  Ask one or two individuals to be "coaches" who will provide verbal assistance from the sidelines.

Debrief questions:

  1. What was the most difficult aspect of the task?

  2. How did the coaches go about providing their advice? How was it received?

  3. What was the quality of communications?

  4. Was there any noticeable frustration between team members?

  5. How was success finally achieved?
