Line Up

INDOOR or OUTDOOR

Challenge

Participants must organize themselves into a pre-determined order as quickly as possible.

Development Areas:

  • Ice Breaker

  • Organizational Skills

  • Problem Solving

  • Leadership

Time:

  • Approximately 5-7 minutes

  • 5-10 minute debrief (more, based on number of participants and length of debrief desired)

Participants:

  • Groups of 20 or more

Materials:

  • Paper/pens for optional information

Preparation and Notes for Facilitator:

  • Divide the group into teams of equal numbers

  • Option:  have the group invent the "signal" for task completion

  • Possibilities for line ups - also ask participants to invent their own:

length of arm's reach

alphabetically by favorite color

number of siblings

hair color, lightest to darkest

length of time with the company

alphabetically by first name

alphabetically by last name

hair length, longest to shortest

Facilitate the activity:

  • Tell them this is a team competition.

  • Give them the Line-Up instructions and tell them to organize themselves as quickly as possible.

  • When the team is satisfied that they have completed the challenge, they are to use a pre-determined signal (clapping hands, singing, etc.)

  • Conduct a practice round and ask them to organize by height.

  • Add an optional feature requiring teams to find out a little known fact and make a list - i.e., make a list of every team member's first career option ... when they were 5 years old, what did they want to be when they grew up.  After all teams have completed their lists, ask each team leader to read the list to the larger group.

  • Announce winner.

Debrief questions:

  1. What was the initial reaction of your team?

  2. How well did the team cope with this challenge?

  3. What skills did it take to be successful as a team?

  4. What creative solutions were suggested and how were they received?

  5. What would an outside observer have seen as the strengths and weaknesses of the team?

  6. What did each team member learn about him/her self as an individual?

  7. What other situations in life or at work are like the Line-Up?
