Create-Your-Own Triathlon

Objective

  • A team-based relay race requiring participants to invent their own physical activities
  • Encourages participation from all team members. Use it for team building or just for pure fun!

Development Areas:

  • Creativity

  • Cooperation

  • Organizational skills

  • Problem Solving

  • Collaboration

  • Communications

Time & Space:

  • Time allowance depends on the number of team members in each small group.

  • Both indoors and outdoors.  Because groups create their own activities, it doesn't matter how much space to you have available.

Participants:

  • Groups of any number, organized into small groups of 5 to 10

Facilitation :

  • Organize participants into their small groups.

  • Explain that they will be participating in a relay race called Create-Your-Own Triathlon. Tell each group they have 2 minutes to choose an event to include in their triathlon.

  • Encourage creativity. (Examples might include a specific number of jumping jacks; walking backward from one specific location to another; singing your national anthem; turning around in circles 10 times; and so on.)

  • After 2 minutes, ask each group in turn to perform the event it selected. Then ask all participants to practice that move. Tell groups to line up in the order in which they will perform the triathlon.

  • Use a starting signal (whistle) to begin the triathlon.

  • Each person in a group must perform all three of the events decided upon by all groups, and then the next person in the group begins.

  • The group that finishes first wins.

Debrief questions:

  1. What was the initial reaction of your team?

  2. How well did the team cope with this challenge?

  3. What skills did it take to be successful as a team?

  4. What would an outside observer have seen as the strengths and weaknesses of the team?

  5. What did each team member learn about others?
