Water Fill

Objective :

  • Teams are given the challenge of filling their bucket with as much water as possible in the fastest time.

Group Size:

  • Teams of 4-12; but you can have as many groups as space and facilitators can handle.

Time:

  • Allow approximately 30 minutes, (more or less time, based on the length and difficulty of your obstacle course).

Equipment :

  • One plastic bucket plus one plastic cup/glass for each team.  A source of water, such as outside tap or water barrel.

Facilitation:

  • Set up an obstacle course using whatever is available in the environment, i.e., going under tables, walking along planks or logs of wood, hurdles.  Be sure to assess the culture and physical capabilities of your group.
  • Set up an empty bucket for each team at the end of the obstacle course.  Explain that teams must fill their bucket with as much water as possible in the fastest time.
  • However, they can only do it by one member at a time running around the obstacle course with a plastic cup of water. If they spill any or all of the water they still have to complete the obstacle course with the cup before returning directly and passing the cup onto the next member of the team.
  • Award points for finishing first and points for most water (use a ruler to measure depth).  If you wish to have all teams as “winners,” other “best in class” ways to recognize team effort include:  best team spirit, most fun team, and any other recognition you can create.  If you do this, be sure every team gets an “award.”

Development Areas:

  • Creativity

  • Cooperation

  • Organizational skills

  • Problem Solving

  • Collaboration

  • Communications

Debrief questions:

1. Were you happy with your team's performance at the end?

2. How did you  figure out any strategy to successful completion of this task?

3. Did everyone on your team agree with all of the decisions being made?

4. Did everyone on your team participate in offering ideas for ways to win?

5. How do you feel your team did during this challenge?
