CRG's Freebee Tool
of the Month

During any change management initiative, employee commitment and motivation is always a top challenge.  One of the take-it-to-the-bank guarantees about change management is that even the most competent people will feel confused and uncertain.  This is a predictable impact of change that happens every single time. There is no way to avoid it, so get over that idea right now.  Don't ignore it though, because left unchecked, the feelings of confusion and uncertainty will attack trust levels within the team. Deteriorating trust is always a breeding ground for Quit-&-Stay ... and now you really have big problems. Teamwork is an absolute imperative for successful change management, so don't wait until you're faced with a team building crisis before taking action.

Team leaders must be proactive and have some creative team building strategies ready to manage this stuff before it escalates into a productivity and morale killer.  One solution that team leaders should always have in their back pocket is a collection of employee recognition strategies, ready to pull out at a moment's notice.  To be an effective change management strategy, recognition ideas need to meet these two rules:

Two Change Management Rules for Recognition

Rule #1      Just-in-Time.
"Employee of the Month," while highly effective for many organizations, just won't work as a change management strategy.  You need nearly instant activities with outcomes that can be realized quickly.  Change isn't slowing down, and you can't either.

Rule #2      One-Size-Fits-One.
Team leaders have to do some diagnostics to figure out the unique motivators for each individual employee. Remember your objective here is to combat the confusion and uncertainty that always accompanies change.  Team members need reassurance that they are valued, that they are appreciated, and that their team leaders support them.  While smart team leaders do this anyway, during change, people's need for recognition skyrockets.  Each individual has his or her own unique motivators.  The good news is that the best recognition solutions are actually low- or no-cost.

Your CRG "Freebee:"  A starter list of ideas for
"How Do You Appreciate Being Appreciated ???"

This is meant to be a starter list. Add your own ideas and adjust the language to fit your culture. Distribute to each team member and ask them to fill in their own ideas and check off the ones that would be meaningful for them.  Ask them to return it to you, signed of course.  They'll love the idea that you care enough to ask.  Then, analyze the results for what you can do within the resources you have available.  You'll be amazed at the economical ideas that will come out of this quick little tool.  Never underestimate the Power of the Pizza!

Send us your most creative ideas and biggest successes and we'll publish them in our FAQ Knowledge Exchange section, or possibly contact you for an interview for a Change-R-Us newsletter article.

Check back often for new "Freebee's of the Month."
